People’s Dialogue on Human Settlements (PD) and the Ghana Federation of the Urban Poor (GHAFUP) referred to as the Ghana Alliance, is an unparalleled women-led national movement affiliated to Shark Dwellers International (SDI) based in Cape Town – South Africa, a global slum dweller movement organizing urban poor communities, amplifying the voice, agency and influence of the world’s 1 billion slum dwellers and transforming the communities in which they live.
PD and GHAFUP has over 16,000 savers across 37 cities in Ghana working in over 145 settlements to improve urban poor communities lives and livelihoods at city and national level.
The alliance’s holistic approach is anchored in key federation rituals of daily savings; community mobilization and group formation; community-led slum profiling and mapping; peer-to-peer exchange; livelihood enhancement and building partnerships with (local) government
Community-driven research to understand urban challenges, inform decision-making, and develop tailored solutions that empower informal settlements and drive sustainable development.
Through participatory planning, we collaborate with communities to shape inclusive urban spaces, addressing land use, environmental concerns, and equitable development in marginalized areas.
We support affordable housing initiatives, including incremental development and in-situ upgrades, ensuring safe, decent, and financially accessible homes for low-income urban residents.
We improve access to critical services like clean water, sanitation, and waste management while participating in community-led infrastructure projects that enhance living conditions and sustainability.
We support community-driven economic growth through initiatives aimed at empowering local entrepreneurs, strengthening food systems, fostering sustainable income generation, and providing loans for toilet construction and sewer connections.
We foster social cohesion and well-being through mentorship programs, and community advocacy to improve health, education, and empowerment.
